Checking the cell phone of your partner is a crime, says DA

A big commotion on the Twitter social network was caused last night by the messages sent by the District Attorney of the National District, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, who reminded people that checking the cell phone of a partner without his/her permission is a crime under Law 53-07 regarding High Technology Crimes and Misdemeanors.

She added that this could mean a sentence of between three months and one year in jail and a fine of up to 200 minimum salaries (over a million RD$). " If the telephone has confidential information taken out and spread around, the penalties go up from one year to 3 years and the fines go from 200 to 400 minimum wages."

The reaction of some people were immediate and the "re-tweets_ of the messages of the District Attorney were not long in coming. And although the accusing finger was pointed at women, Reynoso indicated in her account @YeniBerenice, that 74% of the electronic crimes were committed by men and only 26% by women.
