Starting today we have the new 849 area code
INDOTEL will launch a publicity campaign

SANTO DOMINGO. Beginning today the new area code 849 will go into effect. It was assigned to the country last year and joins 809 and 829 as the nation's area codes.
In order to kick off the beginning of the new area code, this morning the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL) will launch a publicity campaign for the public, which will start with an activity at Indotel headquarters at 9:00 in the morning.
"The Dominican Republic, through Indotel, takes another leap forward, by getting the North American Numbering Plan Administration to approve the new code", said the press release.
The 849 goes into effect barely 5 years after the introduction of the 829 area code, which began in 2005, and, according to the Indotel director, Jose Rafael Vargas, is a sign of the growth that telecommunications has maintained in the country, specifically regarding telephones.
According to information from Indotel, the country has had a continual increase in telephones, especially mobile phones, and now reaches 97% of the population.
