Miguel Vargas asks for supervision of IMF funds
SANTO DOMINGO. The president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), Miguel Vargas Maldonado, demanded yesterday that business, labor, social and religious sectors, together with the political opposition join together to require the creation of a Supervising Commission for the use of the external funds that the government will receive, beginning next November as a result of the agreement with the IMF.
He said he felt that the society should avoid that these billions of dollars that will enter the country end up is wasteful projects, while "the Dominican people become more indebted and limited in the resources of the Budget for social and development investments".
Vargas Maldonado also pointed out that it is necessary to put a brake on irresponsible indebtedness by the government, which has elevated the public debt of US$9.705 billion in August 2004 to US$18.238 billion at the end of 2009, with projections indicating that the year 2010 will end with US$20.800 billion in debt.
